A major conference for bishops of the Anglican Communion that garnered headlines for not inviting same-sex spouses has been postponed over concerns about the coronavirus.

The Lambeth Conference, which was originally scheduled to be held at Canterbury in the United Kingdom in July and August, has been postponed until summer 2021.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, head of the Anglican Communion, announced the rescheduling in a video message posted to the Conference website on Monday.

Welby stated that he believed that ‘the place of a bishop at a time of difficulty is the place of a shepherd when the wolf is attacking the flock.’

It plays to reason that churches are potentially dangerous breeding grounds for an outbreak like the coronavirus illness, officially known as COVID-19. Not only do services involve gatherings of large groups of people, they often involve the touching of strangers’ hands and the sharing of communal cups. And at a time when health experts are recommending social distancing, neither of these actions seem advisable.

Married Lesbian Priest, Bishop Will Lead Worship Service to Protest Ban of LGBT Partners from Anglican Conference

A bishop from New York and a former priest from South Africa, both Anglican, lesbian, and in same-sex marriages, will preside over an inclusive worship service on the eve of the international Lambeth Conference to protest the denomination’s decision to exclude gay spouses from the gathering.

The Right Rev. Mary Glasspool, assistant bishop in the Episcopal Diocese New York, and Mpho Tutu van Furth, daughter of anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu, said they plan to host the service at an undisclosed church in Canterbury, U.K. in July, according to The Church Times. Tickets will be required, but it will also be live-streamed on the Internet.
