Banned books, damned souls and a Zoot suit lizard: 6 graphic novels you need to read

‘Suncatcher’ is a flashback to the early ’00s by L.A.-based Jose Pimienta. When Beatriz starts a band with her friends, she’s on a mission greater than rock stardom. The guitarist needs to write the song that her late grandfather never did in order to free his soul. A rock ‘n’ roll drama with supernatural elements, ‘Suncatcher’ drops readers into the indie rock scene of turn-of-the-century Mexicali, the city where Pimienta was raised. The detailed panels of concerts and house parties keep the story grounded in reality and Pimienta’s action-packed depictions of the band members, plus a lot of music nerdy references, help readers imagine this graphic novel’s soundtrack. Best known as an artist for comics like Cecil Castelucci’s ‘Soupy Leaves Home,’ Pimienta makes his debut as both writer and artist with ‘Suncatcher.’
