The five players of Newbee, Xu “Moogy” Han, Yin “Aq” Rui, Wen “Wizard” Lipeng, Yan “Waixi” Chao and Zeng “Faith” Hongda will likely now struggle to sustain a career in professional Dota.’

Just a day after Ghebreyesus’ statement, the infection cases have passed 400K, according to Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. At the time of writing, there are seven countries that have more than 10K coronavirus cases, including China, Italy, the U.S, Spain, Iran, France, and Germany.

Avengerls and Newbee suspected of match fixing in the SL ImbaTV Minor qualifiers

The Chinese closed qualifiers for a spot at the StarLadder ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor began today and the opening series stirred up a lot of discussion in the Chinese community already.

Avengerls are a team put together by high MMR pub players who made it this far in the competition coming from open qualifiers leg. In the Minor closed qualifiers playoffs upper bracket semifinals they were pitted against Newbee and took game one from them. Unfortunately, what looked like an underdog story about to be written, turned into a match fixing ugly prospect.

Close to the 20 minute mark, Avengerls had a bit over 13K gold advantage and DotaPlus was showing a 95% win chance probability when they decided to walk one by one into the enemy and chain feed until all the advantage was lost. Their suspicious actions continued through the entire game and at the end of it, Newbee posted the following on their Weibo page:

Streaming site caught up in alleged Dota 2 match fixing attempt

Match fixing in Dota 2 was already known to be a big problem, but it might be even more serious than initially expected.

Chinese streaming site Huomao announced it had fired a member of its Dota 2 branch for attempted match fixing. Newbee has been banned indefinitely from Chinese Dota 2 eventsYAHOO!12 hours agoThe decision was made public on the official Weibo accounts of the CDA, as well as Chinese tournament organizer ImbaTV. Newbee ... The individual allegedly reached out to forZe regarding an upcoming event.

‘On February 19, 2020, HuomaoTV was told that one of our Dota 2 team staff, Haotian Xu, had contacted Team forZe suggesting match fixing in a Dota online tournament, EGB.com Arena of Blood,’ HuomaoTV said in a statement on Twitter. ‘HuomaoTV conducted verification immediately and this employee had admitted the fact of him doing it by taking advantage of his role in HuomaoTV. HuomaoTV has fired Haotian Xu and reserves the right to pursue the matter due to the bad influence on the company’s brand.’

A recent controversy has risen out of a Dota 2 match between Team Avengerls and Team Newbee during the StarLadder ImbaTV Minor qualifiers in China. A seemingly unfathomable comeback has drawn the skepticism of the Dota community, especially the keen eye of veteran stream Zhang ‘xiao8’ Ning, who is beyond certain that there was foul play based off of his experience as a player and coach.

In the qualifier, Avengerls was in clear control of the match after handily winning the first match and creating a seemingly insurmountable deficit midway through the second game. LGD, ViCi and More Form Chinese Dota 2 Professional Association

Amidst the many event cancellations sweeping the Dota 2 scene and the esports industry as a whole due to the COVID-19 pandemic, LGD Gaming, ViCi Gaming, and several other Chinese esports organizations have banded together to form an online Dota 2 league.

Dubbed the Chinese Dota 2 Professional Association (CDA), the league will serve as a place for Chinese teams to compete regularly without having to go to actual physical venues, thus allowing them to play and earn prize money without putting themselves in danger of contracting the virus.
