The move aimed at helping low- and moderate-income tenants from being ousted from their homes in a city with a widespread homelessness problem was enacted Monday night with a 7-0 vote by the Seattle City Council despite opposition from Mayor Jenny Durkan, The Seattle Times reported.

Puget Sound Energy wants 14% increase on natural-gas bills

Puget Sound Energy wants to increase natural-gas bills by 14%, about $8 a month for a typical customer and the latest in a slew of rate increases from local utilities.

The utility is adjusting its rates to reflect wholesale natural-gas prices over the past year, which were higher than previously projected. An unusually cold and stormy winter led to a spike in demand for natural gas, while a pipeline explosion in British Columbia last year led to decreased supply, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) said.

‘It definitely was a factor that was not foreseen,’ said Jarrett Tomalin, PSE’s customer communications manager.

How Seattle landlord laws upheld by SCOWA could harm small landowners

The Seattle landlord laws upheld by the Washington State Supreme Court this week would make it illegal to deny an apartment to a convicted rapist based on criminal history, according to Jim Burling, vice president of legal affairs at the Pacific Legal Foundation, which represented the plaintiffs.

In Yim v. City of Seattle, the court upheld the 2016 law that requires Seattle landlords to rent to the first financially-qualified person who applies, as well as the 2018 law that forbids landlords from using potential renters’ criminal histories to deny an apartment to them.
