Service on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines on the Metro-North has been suspended during the course of Tuesday night’s thunderstorm, according to the MTA.
Officials began shutting down service on the Hudson Line shortly before 5pm, following downed trees and weather-related issues that affected passenger safety. Less than 30 minutes later, the authority announced that service on all of three of the lines would be suspended until the storm passed, leaving thousands of commuters without a ride home. In a tweet, the MTA directed customers to avoid Grand Central Terminal until further notice.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY ‘ The Metro-North Railroad halted all trains east of the Hudson River as a thunderstorm slammed the New York City area Tuesday evening, leading officials to temporarily shut entrances to Grand Central Terminal.
Several downed trees in the city’s northern suburbs forced the Metro-North to suspend service on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines of 5:24 p.m. “to ensure customer safety during the course of the thunderstorms in our service area,” the railroad said in a Twitter post.
The cancelations wreaked havoc on Grand Central Terminal during the Tuesday evening rush hour. A photo posted to Twitter showed a massive crowd of commuters huddled in the Midtown train station’s famous main concourse.
