Republicans Narrowly Win North Carolina’s Do-Over Special Election

Ten months after the results of its congressional election were tossed out after allegations of election fraud, North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District finally knows who it will be sending to Congress. Republican state Sen. Dan Bishop, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, won the makeup special election on Tuesday night, defeating Democratic candidate Dan McCready by roughly 4,000 votes out of about 190,000 cast, with 99 percent of precincts reporting.

The results in Tuesday’s election were eerily similar to those of the election last November, in which Republican candidate Mark Harris ‘defeated’ McCready by about 900 votes. Republican wins in close North Carolina congressional race that was seen as a referendum on President Trump

According to a CNN projection, Bishop beat Democrat Dan McCready in a tight race, in what was McCready’s second shot at the seat in the right-leaning district.

McCready, a Marine Corps veteran, had lost a race for the same congressional district in November, but that election result was thrown out after his Republican opponent at the time was hit with voter fraud charges, setting the stage for a special election that drew the attention of the nation and a last-minute campaign visit from Trump himself.

The presidential pep rally appeared to be just enough to keep North Carolina’s Ninth congressional district from falling into the Democratic column. Republican Dan Bishop projected to narrowly win closely watched North Carolina special congressional election

The “do-over” special election came after the state board of elections refused to certify the 2018 House race results in the district after fraud allegations, ordering a new election.

Trump was not on the ballot, but Bishop’s narrow victory in a race widely viewed as a referendum on the White House will provide a small measure of comfort to Republicans in 2020.

Republicans normally would have been expected to dominate in a district that Trump won, but data released to the public ahead of the Tuesday vote showed a close race, underscoring GOP troubles in the suburbs during the Trump era. The President’s approval rating in a number of recent of polls is approaching lows not seen since 2017.
