[ Secret Weapons to Shake Up 2020 NBA Playoffs ]
So much NBA playoff analysis is dedicated to familiar faces, the superstars and fringe stars and top-shelf role players most likely to leave their imprint or dictate the terms of an entire series or ‘

Postseason runs can still be enhanced, if not defined, on the margins. Shortened rotations do not mean that depth is irrelevant. And higher stakes are not only for the superstars and quasi-superstars and painfully obvious X-factors. They are for anyone who can seize the opportunity, even if it’s an unexpected one.

That’s the methodology we’ll be using to suss out this postseason’s best secret weapons. And just so we’re clear: “secret” shouldn’t be interpreted as “completely unknown” or “out of nowhere.”

None of these players are what you’d call household names, but some can qualify as regular ol’ X-factors. Others are of the traditional role-player variety. They’re all in line for the chance to have bigger and better postseasons than expected’performances that won’t always be reflected in the box score but are no less pivotal to turning an entire series.

This is my fourth season covering the NBA Draft for The Step Back. Every year is a little bit different, but the basic goals of draft coverage remain the same: try to reasonably project who will be the most successful NBA Draft prospects in a given year, and identify what the best roles and ideal situations for a player will be once they reach the NBA.

Philadelphia 76ers: Robert Covington is Houston’s secret weapon

Since losing Joel Embiid minutes into an ugly outing against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Sixers are 2-4 despite some eye-popping performances by Shake Milton.

Truly these are the worst of time in South Philly’ at least, until the next worst of times which will surely come as these things so often do for Philly sports fans.

Preview: Denver Nuggets try to recapture secret sauce against Houston Rockets

Injured players: Gary Harris – doubtful (adductor), Jamal Murray – out (ankle), Paul Millsap – out (knee), Bol Bol – out (foot), Mason Plumlee – out (cuboid), Gerald Green – out (cuneiform)

The Nuggets might need Joker to play all 48 tonight as they have no backup center to speak of. Without Millsap they also are going to have a hard time sliding over Jerami Grant to the five because he needs to occupy so many of Millsap’s minutes at the four. One thing is for sure, we’re getting a whole lot of Nikola v Clint in this one tonight. That of course is not great for the Nuggets as Capela is probably the player Joker struggles to most to defend. It’s not so much that Capela overmatches Jokic (he doesn’t) but the way the Rockets use him and how hard he rolls on the pick and roll makes it tough for Joker to keep up. The Rockets are the kings of getting the defense to switch the exact player they want onto Harden and against the Nuggets that player is Jokic. Denver needs Jokic to not only contain Capela on the defensive end but also to dominate him on the offensive end. Without a big performance from Joker it’s hard to see the Nuggets winning this one.
