The dirty little secret behind jobless claims: record

Jennifer Materkoski didn’t even bother applying for unemployment benefits when she abruptly lost her public relations job early this year.

The source code. The complete details.

The share of laid-off workers seeking jobless benefits is lowest on record. It’s raising questions about a vital safety net in event of downturn

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell to a near 45-year low last week, pointing to strong job growth in February. Aleksandra Michalska reports. Video provided by Reuters Newslook

‘I wasn’t sure I would qualify’ says Materkoski, 35, who lives in Wheeling, West Virginia, and doubted she could access benefits because she was a contract employee. She also figured she had a good shot at another job. She got one, but it took two months, leaving her and her husband in a financial hole after buying a house late last year.

“We’re the ones on the right side of history”: interview with Steve Bannon

Steve Bannon, President Trump’s former political strategist, is on manoeuvres in Europe. Having helped catapult Donald Trump into the White House in 2016, Bannon claims he is now in demand from right-wing populist leaders throughout Europe hoping his campaigning skills can help them win in next year’s European Parliament elections.

And despite an early setback which could see his influence thwarted because of electoral rules on foreign interference, Bannon is pledging to ensure that next year’s European elections move up a notch by taking news about the elections from their usual spot, hidden deep inside newspapers, and onto the front pages.

Poverty And Caring For the Aged: Singapore’s Dirty Little Secrets

If you mention ‘Singapore’ to almost anyone the country’s rapid economic growth, towering skyscrapers, rule of (by) law, and general orderliness are likely among the topics most often raised. However, Singapore has a dark, dirty little secret; Poverty, and the way its rapidly enlarging aged community is being increasingly marginalised.

Taking to social media to get its message across, opposition political party the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) late last year released a video highlighting the rising poverty and inequality in the city-state, particularly among its elderly.

List: White House touts 52 ‘accomplishments’ Woodward ignored

Nearly 600 days into the Trump administration, the White House is touting a lengthy list of accomplishments as it moves to promote GOP chances in the midterm elections and push back on reporter Bob Woodward’s new book that describes internal chaos.

Leading the list of 52 major wins is the booming economy, the increase in jobs and the tax cut that led several companies to dish out $1,000 bonuses.

The list was included in a White House statement decrying Woodward’s latest, ‘Fear,’ also the target of denials from quoted figures including the defense secretary and White House chief of staff.

Fed Shouldn’t End Trump Boom Just Because Wages Are Strong

Jobs: With 201,000 new jobs created, unemployment remained just above its all-time low at 3.9% in August. Meanwhile, wages shot up by a faster-than-expected 2.9% for blue-collar and low-wage workers, the fastest in nine years. Great news, right? Not for some.

African-American unemployment at 6.3% equaled its second-lowest level ever. Asians and Hispanics, likewise, are at or near all-time lows for unemployment. It’s boom times for the bottom rungs of the ladder, who suffered disproportionately during the financial crisis.
