Quite a lot has been going on:

US weighs travel ban on Chinese Communists but can it spot them?

Members of the Chinese Communist Party and their families — the elites of Chinese society — fear they may soon be barred from visiting the U.S.

The New York Times reported last Thursday that President Donald Trump’s administration is considering a sweeping ban on arrivals by party members and their relatives. The presidential proclamation, still in draft form, could also authorize the U.S. government to revoke the visas of party members and their kin who are already in the country, leading to their expulsion, the report added.

That the operator did not deny the report came as a shock to the party member, who was thinking of traveling to the U.S. in the future.

EU puts 14 countries on ‘safe list’, but excludes the US

The European Union has excluded the United States from its initial “safe list” of countries from which the bloc will allow non-essential travel from Wednesday.

The 27-member bloc gave approval on Tuesday to leisure or business trips from 14 countries beyond its borders: Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay.

China has also been provisionally approved, but’only if Chinese authorities also allow’in EU visitors. Reciprocity is a condition of being on the list.

With the UK’s long-awaited ‘air bridge’ announcement, outlining which countries Britons can visit without the need to self-isolate on their return,’expected soon, the EU’s list is’likely to create’problems. For example, if the UK includes France on its own list but’leaves off Uruguay, Britons could simply fly to the South American country via Paris and bypass the rules.’

Kafkaesque case of travel ban – Millennium Post

We are all of us a mixture of good and bad impulses that prevail in an excited crowd. There is in most men an impulse to persecute whatever is felt to be ‘different’. There is also a hatred of any claim to superiority, which makes the stupid many hostile to the intelligent few. A motive such as fear of communism affords what seems a decent moral excuse for a combination of the herd against everything in any way exceptional. This is a recurring phenomenon in human history. Wherever it occurs, its results are horrible.”

Four decades later, our ideals of liberty and freedom have been tested by another case of denial to the right to travel abroad. This time, it is not about one individual but a batch of more than 2,500 individuals belonging to more than 40 nations; this time the persons aggrieved are not being stopped from travelling out of their own country but to their own countries; only this time perhaps there is not much outrage as these people are felt to be ‘different’.
