The viral video-sharing app TikTok is facing a ban in one of its biggest global markets just a month into its new CEO’s tenure.

TikTok did not respond to Business Insider’s request for comment about Mayer’s meeting with TikTok India employees.

In its announcement of the ban, Indian authorities say they’ve received “many complaints” about apps accused of “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.”‘

The addition of Mayer, who is based in TikTok’s Los Angeles offices, could be helpful in assuaging those concerns.’

India reinforces flashpoint area as China holds ground: sources

Indian fighter jets roared over a flashpoint Himalayan region Wednesday as part of a show of strength following what military sources say has been a Chinese takeover of contested territory.

But both countries have maintained troops around the valley, with India deploying more forces and trying to project military might.

Indian jets regularly took off Wednesday from a military base in Leh, the main Indian town in the contested region, and headed towards the mountainous border 240 kilometres (150 miles) away.

There were also checkpoints on main roads out of Leh and a frenzy of military activity around the town, which lies at 3,500 metres (11,500 feet).

The Facebook boycott advertisers have the right company but the wrong diagnosis

It was a big news day for bans: Twitch temporarily banned Donald Trump, Reddit banned The_Donald, YouTube banned a group of far-right creators, and India banned TikTok. But I still haven’t written about the Facebook ad boycott, which accelerated since last I wrote ‘ so let’s talk about that today, and we’ll get to the rest later this week.

* * *

A social media advertising boycott that began with some outerwear brands picked up steam over the weekend, and has been joined by some of the giants of consumer brand advertising. Unilever, Verizon, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, and Clorox are among those who have pulled their ads. (Microsoft did so quietly in May.) Some pulled their ads for a month; some put their ads on an indefinite ‘pause.’ Some pulled their ads from Facebook only; others pulled them from Twitter and YouTube as well. Some joined an official boycott led by a coalition of civil rights groups that includes the Anti-Defamation League and NAACP; others nodded respectfully at the boycott but said they were doing their own thing.

Inside the secretive world of India’s social media content moderators

NEW DELHI : New Delhi: When the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) first began in India in December 2019, moderators at Bigo Live were asked to ‘reduce visibility” of videos involving protest. Bigo Live is a Chinese social media platform that allows people to share live videos. It has over 200 million users in the country. Eventually, the platform told its moderators to ban all content around the protests altogether.

It instantly changed what 200 million Indians could see or perceive. And a handful of Indians affected that change ‘ Bigo’s content moderators, many of whom sit inside the company’s Gurugram office. A lot of the moderation work is also outsourced, to a slew of companies that originally cropped up during the business process outsourcing (BPO) boom of the late-1990s. Content moderation is arguably the most important task that BPOs in India perform today, fulfilling outsourced contracts for social media giants ranging from Facebook and TikTok to LIKEE and Bigo Live, among others.
