UFC 234 results: Montana De La Rosa earns submission win over Nadia Kassem

Nadia Kassem had the crowd’s support in her Australian homeland and an undefeated record for her Saturday night fight with Montana De La Rosa.

First here as indicated. The full 20.

But there are levels to this, as Kassem found out the hard way at UFC 234. Competing in her 14th fight at age 23, De La Rosa put on a ground clinic against her overmatched foe before winning via armbar submission. The time of the stoppage at Rod Laver Arena was 2:37 of the second round.

The Texas native completely dominated the opening round, perhaps to the point of a 10-8 round, as she did everything except submit Kassem on the mat.

‘She kind of tapped and submitted verbally,’ De La Rosa said after her eighth career submission win. ‘She was kind of gumby in there, she was hard to submit so congrats to her for being tough.’

Quite a lot has been going on:

Jose Aldo vs. Cub Swanson Rematch Targeted for UFC 233

WEC was later acquired by the UFC back in the Zuffa era, and Aldo’s featherweight dominance continued up to his meeting with Conor McGregor at UFC 194. He’s 2-2 since then, losing back-to-back fights against 145lb champ Max Holloway, sandwiched between wins over Frankie Edgar and Jeremy Stephens. The Stephens win, at UFC Calgary this past July, looked to be a return to form for the former champion.

Cub Swanson, meanwhile, has lost three straight under the UFC banner, making the timing of this fight rather interesting. Dropping fights to both Brian Ortega (a year ago) and Frankie Edgar (at UFC Atlantic City in April), Swanson was most recently defeated by Renato Moicano via submission at UFC 227.

UFC 234: Whittaker vs. Gastelum Current Fight Card

Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will return to action in his home country to defend his title against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 234.

Whittaker will defend the 185-pound strap against someone other than Yoel Romero for the first time since 2017. He will do so against the No.4-ranked Gastelum in the night’s main event.

UFC 234 takes place at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The main card will air live on pay-per-view while the prelims are expected to air on ESPN+.

2018’s breakout fighter of the year, Israel Adesanya, will meet Anderson Silva, the longest reigning middleweight champion the sport has ever known in the evening’s co-main event.

Alex Volkanovski stops former title challenger Mendes; Anderson also wins at UFC 232

Coming into the fight as an underdog many predicted Australian Alex Volkanovski to struggle against former UFC featherweight title holder Chad Mendes; whose career losses included Jose Aldo, Conor McGregor and Frankie Edgar. You can add Alex Volkanovski to that list after the 30-year-old Shellharbour resident stopped Mendes at UFC 232 earlier today.

* * *

Volkanovski and Mendes got the main card started in style. Early in the first round though, both had an extended feeling out process before they began to connect inside the pocket. Volkanovski thwarted a takedown attempt. A second takedown attempt late in the round put Volkanovski on the canvas though he wasn’t there long and scrambled back to his feet immediately.
